Letter Sounds - Long and Short Vowel Sounds
Student's should try to pronounce both the long and short vowel sounds, but if the teacher allows, the student may be allowed to only get only one exactly correct and may provide leeway with annunciation.
This could apply to a second language student or any student with variations in speech. To maintain assessment validity, the assessments should be administered and the exceptions scored with the same expectations as what is being taught. If you allow them to make certain sounds in their learning process then please do so when administering our measures. The teachers decision should remain consistent with the overall instruction.
