Reading alignment
Alignment for reading is a bit different than math. The easyCBM reading measures are based upon the “Big Five” from the National Reading Panel. Research has identified the five core components of effective reading instruction as:
- Phonemic Awareness: (Phoneme Segmenting-PS and Letter Names-LN). The ability to recognize and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.
- Phonics (Letter Sounds-LS). Understanding the relationship between sounds and their corresponding letters.
- Fluency: (Word Reading Fluency-WRF and Passage Reading Fluency-PRF). The ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
- Vocabulary (VOC). The knowledge of word meanings.
- Comprehension (Basic-BRdg and Proficient Reading-PR). The ability to understand and interpret the meaning of text.
We have research documentation on our website at: brtprojects.org. Go to Publications then Technical Reports.
In this section are also studies we've conducted on the alignment of easyCBM Deluxe measures to certain Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Pay particular attention to 2013 and 2014 with lead authors Saven, J. L. and Irvin, P. S. The data that is most applicable is in Appendix B: Item Statistics by Test Form.
For a comparison of alignment to reading (and math) state and national content standards of all 50 states, refer to The Alignment Between easyCBM Mathematics and Literacy Assessments and State and National Standards, look to Technical Report 2101.
